Persian Peacocks 226/18 Vase
Persian Peacocks pays homage to William De Morgan who developed a ‘Persian’ colour palette for his ceramic designs. He created a number of peacock ceramic borders in a variety of colours, while Nicola has chosen her own, in shades of blues and greens set against a crisp, ivory background, to bring her fan tailed birds to life.
By the 1880s peacocks and other exotic birds had achieved widespread popularity in Victorian culture, however these creatures had a rich history long before they had appeared in Arts and Crafts designs. In India they were a symbol of royalty for many centuries. De Morgan’s contemporaries such as Walter Crane and Louis Comfort Tiffany also featured them in their designs, so it is not surprising that over 100 years later they are still appearing in fine ceramic designs, such as this latest Moorcroft prestige vase from Nicola.
