The Mother Town PLQ14 Plaque
Burslem, home to the world-famous Moorcroft pottery, is locally known as ‘The Mother’ Town. It is one of six towns that together make up the City of Stoke-on-Trent. Burslem contains Britain's last real working industrial district, where people live within walking distance of the numerous pottery factories and as a result much of the nineteenth-century industrial heritage, buildings and character of the town have survived intact. Designer, Nicola Slaney celebrates Burslem’s history with this design that sees the soot covered smoking bottle kilns of yesteryear intermingled with grey pot bank buildings. History and heritage are still alive in this industrious image of a bygone age.
