Mallaig - Master 576/9 Vase
“If there is a place that I would call my second home, it would be Scotland, a land of myth and legend and endless design possibilities. Sightings of orca whales have moved people to tears, not only, sadly, because of their rarity, but also because this is probably one of the most awesome sights on planet Earth.” – Vicky Lovatt
If you are extraordinarily fortunate, you may catch a glimpse of an orca whale in the waters near Mallaig, on the west coast of Scotland. It is the place where the Jacobite steam train on Glenfinnan Viaduct vase, made famous in Vicky’s prestige design of the same name, ends its journey. Mallaig is inspired by one of Vicky’s first limited editions, Arisaig, and with fresh, Dali-like surreal quality, a pod of orca whales can be found in the swell as they breached the surface in their slow, majestic manner. Vicky’s orca whales announce their presence with a thunderous blast of water through a blowhole – you can almost hear that sound, like the opening of the woodwind section of an orchestra, echo over the cobalt waves. As her whales undergo their periodic deep-dive, dorsal fins appear like the crest of a wave itself, and you are left searching for more. This is intelligent design at its very best.
