RSPB Conwy High Tide Collection
Whilst Starling murmurations grace the winter skies at RSPB Conwy, a stroll along a boardwalk, through a reedbed, to the sounds of Reed Warblers in summertime is a pleasure that Moorcroft simply could not miss. Indeed, with the opportunity of looking across two lagoons which attract wading birds and waterbirds, especially in August, meant a diary date was to be secured for an August launch of the RSPB Conwy High Tide Collection. The name is simple. Imagery is striking for birds at high tide, when the river pushes waders to roost and feed on the islands.
The lagoons provide a refuge for hundreds of wading birds that move off the estuary at high tide. Vegetation on the islands is cut short each autumn to make them suitable for roosting Curlews which stand proud in the mud banks under a summer’s eve speckled like cake crumbs with Cinnabar Moths. The water in the lagoons is fresh, not tidal, so the RSPB team rely on rainfall to fill it during the winter, with additional water pumped from the nearby Afon Ganol. This is a reserve on a mammoth scale, which required our designers to raise their ambitions, and provide a high tide in Moorcroft design. Rugged, Carneddau Welsh Mountain Horses roam free against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains that carry their name and a minutiae of detail is celebrated underglaze from the bumblebee-mimicking Bee Orchid, Chicory, scrub and grassland, to colourful Goldfinches flashing their red cheeks against lilac spear thistles.
