Brean Down 102/3 Vase

Vase

Kerry’s thoughts were in another part of Britain, on Brean Down in Somerset. The southern slopes of the down have three rare plants which live together in close proximity in this closely-grazed, open turf. The most noticeable plant flowering in early summer is the rare White Rock Rose. It grows in abundance on Brean Down, and this is its most northerly world limit. It is only known to exist in two other places in Britain. Other rare plants which grow on Brean Down include the inconspicuous Dwarf Sedge, which flowers in early spring, the late flowering Goldilocks and the Somerset Hair Grass, found only in England in the Mendips.

Butterflies regularly seen on Brean Down include the Common Blue, Meadow Brown and the Marbled White. Kerry chose to include a solitary Common Blue butterfly together with White Rock Roses, bright yellow cowslips and diminutive purple violets.
