The Christmas Story 120/9 Vase

Limited Edition
Vase

The Christmas Story was an illustrated manuscript designed by Frances and Margaret MacDonald. The sisters were married to Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Herbert McNair and together they made ‘The Four’ – leading artists in the Art Nouveau movement. Produced c.1895-1896 the manuscript was made from hand-painted watercolours with gold paint on vellum with fine stitching in gold thread.

The title page featured a stylised Christmas tree, which was also a symbol for the tree of life. Christmas trees have become symbolic with the festive season and so it was apt that Nicola took her design inspiration from the MacDonalds’ manuscript title page for her design. Adorning her Christmas tree is a golden star and running parallel to the tree trunk are a series of Art Nouveau style elongated shapes, whilst under the tree itself, an intricate framework adds a new dimension to the design.

In the original manuscript, gold print and thread brought warmth to its pages and so Nicola has used an unusual cream coloured clay to bring a warmth of her own to The Christmas Story. Today, the MacDonalds’ manuscript can be seen in the Huntarian Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow.
