Almandin PLQ7 Plaque
A hybrid of Cattleya Ivanhoe gx x Cattleya Dupreana gx, bred by an American orchid breeder Oliver M. Tucker c.1931, Cattleya Capeheart gx ‘Almandin’ (once known as × Laeliocattleya ‘Almandin’) is really something quite special, holding dark red /pink purple to deep, mauve blooms. This clone ‘Almandin’ gained an Award of Merit from the RHS on 8 September 1931 when it was exhibited by B. Schröder. Fortunately for orchid lovers, this award winning orchid was painted by Nelly Roberts and kept in the RHS Lindley Collections for future generations to discover.
In the earthenware idiom, these are complex colour combinations which require layer upon layer of glaze application by Moorcroft artists to ensure that the richness of this demure plaque does justice to Nelly’s work. Moorcroft’s Almandin raises the darker coloured lip of deep purple as an emblem of triumph flagged by stems of cabbage greens.
