Britain’s hedgerows start to wake up this month. Clouds of blackthorn blossom appear, offering tiny stars of white flowers to give hope to us all as winter comes to an end. New life is emerging and for many birds, this is hedgerow nestbuilding time. The blackthorn blossom screens the birds’ nests and offers vital protection. Blackthorn fruit, dark purple berries famous for flavouring drinks, follows its spring blossom in the autumn and helps keep the hedgerow alive throughout the year.
