Harvest Festival

Autumn is the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness and marks the end of the growing season. Celebrated in churches and schools around the United Kingdom, Harvest Festivals are held on the Sunday nearest to the harvest moon. Moorcroft mark the start of autumn with a Harvest Festival of our very own at the Moorcroft Heritage Visitor Centre between Saturday 7th October and Saturday 21st October. In the past, Harvest Festivals would be held as soon as the harvest had been completed and the final cartload triumphantly returned to the farm where the Harvest Supper, also known as the ‘Harvest Home’, would take place. And so it is with Moorcroft, designs are still coming hot from the kiln, in readiness for a time of thanksgiving for our craftsmanship, artistry and design heritage and also, for our friends worldwide who appreciate our efforts.

In Greek the word fruit can mean “deed, action, or result.” The fruit of Moorcroft’s 125 years of artistry and Kerry Goodwin’s sheer design acumen come together in the 2023 Harvest Festival designs to create a smorgasbord of colour and delight in the Applied Arts. Art Director, Elise Adams, gave Kerry a suggestion for her ceramic designs – “This is a time to celebrate home grown produce such as jams, cakes, and pickles as well as fruit and vegetables in all their Autumnal nostalgia. This year, Moorcroft could honour, through our work, the farmers and workers of the land who grow and reap crops.”

Moorcroft will gift 25 pounds from each piece sold in the Harvest Festival Collection during the Harvest Festival period to the Stoke on Trent Food Bank which is currently in urgent need of all supplies. Furthermore, Moorcroft have arranged for Stoke on Trent Food Bank to collect Harvest Festival Food donations of the products they are desperately short of listed below. If you can spare any of these items, please drop them off at the Heritage Visitor Centre.  Over 90% of the food distributed by foodbanks in The Trussell Trust network is donated by the public – that’s why your food donations are absolutely vital to their ability to give everyone referred to them a balanced and nutritious three day supply of food. Please bring them with you to the Harvest Festival and together, the Moorcroft Pottery Family can make a difference.
