The Goldcrest Warrior PLQ5 Plaque
The smallest bird in Britain is one of our country’s best and bravest feathered warriors. Indeed, the diminutive Goldcrest will defend its nest by pecking courageously at any intruder it deems to be a threat. A lover of pine trees, it has been known to build a nest with its mate as many as fifty feet off the ground! Using moss and soft, warm feathers, it suspends the nest like a cradle under a suitable branch or twig using spiders’ webs as complex ropes or strong string.
Both male and female tend to have yellow - green plumage with a double wing bar, the male has an orange crest whilst the female has a crest which is rather more golden yellow. It is the courageous and colourful female which stirs both admiration and respect among all those of us fortunate enough to see one during its time as a parent. Emma offers us two Goldcrests complete with pinecones and a potentially fine nesting site.
