A Rose For Love 3/5 Vase

Limited Edition
Vase

Moorcroft designer, Emma Bossons was inspired by a hand-coloured engraving of a rose styled as Rosa × centifolia holosericea from Henry Cranke Andrews’s ‘Roses: or a Monograph of the Genus Rosa’ Volume 1 (London, 1805-1828). For our sheer delight, Emma has woven this striking rose with large, truly single flowers, which are a strong shade of vermilion red, a colour family and pigment most often used between antiquity and the 19th century from the powdered mineral cinnabar (a form of mercury sulphide), among dense foliage. Each of the blooms holds a large boss of yellow stamens with butter-milk anthers. We are not sure of how the engraver achieved the bright vermilion colour shades but one thing is certain; the Moorcroft artistry team have used a new metallic oxide combination called New Red which was only discovered when the art pottery created a design called the Moorcroft Robin last Christmas, a fortuitous coincidence indeed.

The rose as a symbol of love in all its forms has endured through the ages, with medieval literature, such as 'Roman de la Rose', adding to the rose’s notoriety. Red is not only one of the primary colours, it is also favoured among artists—dating back to prehistory. The warm colour is most commonly associated with love in western culture and remains an attractive, vibrant colour that immediately brings attention to itself, especially when holding such a striking vermilion-red - a fitting tribute of admiration to Henry Cranke Andrews (f.1794 – 1830), a talented botanical artist, engraver and colourist and whose very own Rosa × centifolia holosericea held heart-shaped petals.
