Paix 65/6 Vase
Poppies and cornflowers are both symbols of World War I and World War II. In the Commonwealth, poppies represent soldiers who lost their lives, as the flowers, red petals poignantly emerged in the churned-up battlefields. The French equivalent, le bleuet, or cornflower is less well known but artificial cornflowers are sold around 8th May and the funds raised go to former combatants. Today both flowers represent peace – or paix in French.
On her selection of four vases and a framed plaque, Emma, has applied a bouquet of bright red common poppies and vibrant blue cornflowers, some of which fade to mauve in the distance. Sheaves of harvest corn burst from the bunch, complete with delicate herringbone patterns tubelined within.
