Hockeridge and Pancake Woods - Dragonfly PLQ12 Plaque

Numbered Edition
Plaque

A prestige vase and a plaque quartet highlight the story of Miss Mary Wellesley, Great-great Granddaughter of the Duke of Wellington, a lady who had a bold vision for the future. Through the sheer love and understanding of trees she was the harbinger of a resilient woodland, known as Hockeridge and Pancake Woods, that not only looked beautiful, with colourful and architectural avenues of trees, but supported wildlife, combated disease and the challenges associated with our changing climate.

These ancient woodlands hide several clues to a historic past. Archaeological features, such hedge banks, pillow mounds and chalk pits lie under centuries of fallen leaves and nature-rich, ancient woodland soils. The ponds in these woods have stood the test of time, having been dug out time and again by generations of willing hands over the centuries. Kerry takes us deep into the heart of Hockeridge and Pancake Woods where these historic pools are framed by a rich woodland canopy, and dragonflies cast their mysterious blue silhouettes over a trio of badgers, flashing their short legs and squat black and white bodies through the ferns and foxgloves. The ponds today (as they have for centuries) provide clean water for animals, including bats and amphibians and high-quality wildlife habitats to support a thriving ecosystem.
