Seconds Busy Bee 711/2 Bowl
Poet William Blake once wrote ‘The busy bee has no time for sorrow’ – a phrase that is most apt for the hardworking bee at the centre of Kerry’s miniature bowl design. Nestled in the midst of a delicate pink flower in full bloom, this small bee is busy gathering nectar while the sun shines. Soon it will be time for it to move on to the next flower in the meadow until it is fully laden and can return to its hive. To add to the delicacy of the bee’s wings, Kerry has employed the use of scragfitto to incise into the clay very fine lines. When washed with Moorcroft’s metallic oxide paints a very subtle pattern in the clay becomes visible to create the effect of a bee’s transparent wings.
What is a Moorcroft second?
All our art pottery is closely inspected before it leaves the Moorcroft factory and the selection process is as rigorous as any in the world. As a result, not all pieces emerge unblemished in their quality assessment. The fault or faults may be in the finish of a piece, whether it be a tiny tubeline miss, an incorrectly painted petal, or a small glaze run. Seconds are not ‘red-dotted’, all of them are far too good for that, and each seconds piece has a charm and individuality of its own. Any fault is not structural and the piece can still be used for the purpose it was made.
