Market Day - Number 1 PLQ10 Plaque
A market has been held in Saffron Walden since 1141. Today, market days are twice a week and shoppers can enjoy browsing and buying goods from a wide range of stalls. The sheer range of goods on offer is the market’s greatest strength, with stallholders selling artisan bread, cheese, fresh fish, locally sourced fruit and vegetables, specialty foods and international wines, not to mention antiques and collectables, clothing, fabrics, jewellery, flowers and plants.
Saffron Walden is proud to have been featured in ‘The Market Times’ where it was described as “a popular and sought-after town to live, where the market gives it character and identity.” In 2018, the market won the title of “Best Small Outdoor Market” in the Great British Market Awards.
In Kerry’s design, the black and white timbered town hall, which dates back to 1761, and the imposing library building which was founded in 1832, holding books dating back to the 14th century, encompass the market square. While towering above the bustling market is St. Mary’s Church, the largest in Essex. Down below, people mingle as they look at the varied produce on display under the covered stalls, chat to friendly vendors and enjoy all the hustle and bustle of market day.
