Met In Love - Number 1 77/11 Vase
In c.1897, James Herbert McNair drew a pencil sketch called ‘Sacred Dove and Lowly Bird, Met in Love by Holy Word’ depicting Mary cradling the Infant. In 2003, the sketch was sold through Sotheby’s, though another example remains in the Huntarian Art Gallery in Glasgow.
With only this pencil sketch to inspire Emma, the colour for her design comes straight from her imagination. Mary is the personification of an Art Nouveau lady with dark flowing hair and delicate features. Above and below her, a series of blue birds soar towards the rim of the vase while the main focus is the baby Infant himself, gently cradled by his mother in the central band of the design. Met in Love is the inaugural design on the unusual 77/11 shape. Emma’s colour palette is softened by the use of celadon clay which gives the design a feeling of calm and peace and brings McNair’s original design to life this Christmastime.
